Maggots are never the problem – they are the symptom
Maggots are fly larvae. They cannot appear on their own, they do not travel far, and they hatch within a day or so of eggs being laid. So if you have maggots, a fly laid eggs within a few metres of where you found them, on something it could feed its young on.
Which means the job is finding that thing. Usually it is obvious – the bin, a forgotten bag of rubbish, pet waste, meat scraps or a blocked drain. Clean it, treat the area, and the problem is genuinely over.
But sometimes it is not obvious, and this is where cleaning alone fails. Maggots dropping from a ceiling, appearing in a light fitting, or crawling out from under a skirting board mean something has died in the cavity above. The larvae are leaving the carcass to pupate. No amount of mopping resolves that – the carcass has to come out.
So when you call, the first thing we work out is which of those two you have. One is a clean-up. The other is a dead animal job, and quoting the first when it is really the second is how people end up paying twice.
Bin Maggots Or Something Worse?
Where they turn up tells us whether this is a clean-up or a carcass in your ceiling.

In the bin or bin area
The everyday case
White, legless larvae in the bottom of the bin, under the liner or in the bin enclosure, usually after warm weather and a missed collection. House flies and blowflies laid eggs on food waste.
What it means: A clean-up and treatment. We treat the bin and enclosure, deal with the adult flies, and the problem stays gone as long as the bin area stays sealed.
Dropping from the ceiling or a light fitting
The one that matters
Larvae appearing indoors with no food source in sight, often falling from a ceiling rose or crawling out at the skirting. They are leaving a carcass above to pupate somewhere dry.
What it means: This is a dead animal job. The maggots will keep coming until the carcass is located and removed, so we quote it as removal plus sanitising rather than a clean-up.

Around a drain or floor waste
The hidden one
Larvae in or near a floor waste, shower drain or grease trap, feeding on the organic film and debris inside the pipe rather than on anything you can see.
What it means: Biological drain treatment to digest the film they are living in. Surface cleaning and bleach do not reach it, which is why this one keeps recurring.
Working Out Which One You Have
Six observations and what each points to.
Maggots in the bin after a hot week
The ordinary case – eggs laid on food waste, hatched in the heat. A clean-up and treatment resolves it.
Larvae on the floor with no food source nearby
They came from above or behind. Look at the ceiling directly overhead – this usually means a carcass in the cavity.
Blowflies at one window at the same time
Confirms it. Adults gathering at the light plus larvae on the floor is the standard dead-animal signature.
A smell that started a few days before the maggots
Decomposition precedes the larvae. If the smell came first, this is not a bin problem.
Maggots near a floor waste or shower drain
Breeding in the organic film inside the pipe. Needs biological treatment rather than cleaning.
Larvae in pet bedding or on the lawn
Pet waste or a dead animal in the yard. Common, usually straightforward, and worth checking under decking and dense shrubs.
Four Steps, One Clear Quote
Establish the source first – it decides whether this is a clean-up or a removal.
Find the source
Bin, drain, pet waste – or a carcass in a ceiling, wall or subfloor. This is the step that decides everything, and it is why we ask where you found them when you call.
Clear written quote
You get the source and the price before we start. If it turns out to be a dead animal, we quote that job honestly rather than charging for a clean-up that will not hold.
Remove and treat
Larvae removed and the area treated, plus biological foam where a drain is involved, or full carcass removal where that is the source.
Sanitise and prevent
The area is sanitised and we deal with the adult flies still laying, plus advice on bins, drains and waste handling so it does not repeat.
Maggot Removal Cost Melbourne
Published, quoted in writing, and priced on the source.
Maggot treatment
Bin, waste area or yard. Larvae removed, area treated and sanitised.
Drain source treatment
Biological foam through affected drains and floor wastes.
Carcass source removal
Where the maggots trace to a dead animal – removal, sanitising and deodorising.
Commercial premises
Kitchens and waste rooms, scheduled outside trading hours with records.
What the price covers: finding the source, removing the larvae, treating and sanitising the area, dealing with the adult flies, and written prevention advice.
Comparing quotes? Maggot work in Melbourne tracks fly treatment pricing, roughly $169-199, with same-day common. The one thing worth checking is whether the quote includes finding the source – a clean-up alone will not hold if a carcass is involved. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.
We treat what they hatched from
Removing larvae is the easy half. If the source is still there, they are back within days – so the source is what we quote on.
Three Things Most Maggot Companies Will Not Tell You
Cleaning alone often fails
If the larvae are coming from a carcass in the ceiling, mopping the floor achieves nothing. They keep arriving until the source is removed.
They tell you exactly where to look
Larvae leave a carcass to pupate somewhere dry, so their trail points back to it. That is genuinely useful information, and it is why we ask where you found them.
Bleach down the drain does not work
Drain-breeding larvae live in the organic film lining the pipe. Bleach runs past it. Biological foam digests the film, which is what actually clears it.

Maggots Removal Melbourne FAQs
The questions we are asked most, answered straight.
How much does maggot removal cost in Melbourne?
Ours starts from $169 for a bin, waste area or yard source, $199 where a drain is involved and needs biological treatment, and $249 where the maggots trace back to a dead animal and the carcass has to be removed.
Where do maggots come from?
They are fly larvae. A fly laid eggs on something it could feed its young on, within a few metres of where you found them, and they hatched within about a day. So maggots always mean there is a source close by – the job is finding it.
Why do I have maggots but no obvious rubbish?
Because the source is probably not visible. Larvae dropping from a ceiling, appearing in a light fitting or crawling out at a skirting almost always means something has died in the cavity above and they are leaving it to pupate.
Will they go away if I just clean up?
If the source was the bin or some food waste, yes. If they are coming from a carcass in a wall or roof, no – they will keep arriving until it is removed. That is why we establish the source before quoting.
How do I stop maggots in my bin?
Keep the lid sealed, bag waste rather than tipping it in loose, rinse the bin after collection, and keep it out of direct afternoon sun. Warm weather plus an unsealed bin is the standard Melbourne recipe for it.
What are the maggots near my shower drain?
Drain fly larvae, feeding on the organic film lining the inside of the pipe. Cleaning the surface and pouring bleach down will not reach them – it needs a biological foam that digests the film.
Are maggots dangerous?
Not directly, but they indicate contamination – decomposing waste or a carcass – and the adult flies that follow move between that source and your food surfaces. In a food business they are a serious compliance problem.
How quickly can you come out?
Same day in most cases if you book before 2pm, and we treat maggots dropping indoors as urgent because it usually means an active carcass. The phone is answered 24 hours.
Do you treat commercial kitchens and waste rooms?
Yes, scheduled outside trading hours, with treatment records for your food safety file. Waste rooms and floor wastes are the two areas that most often produce this in commercial premises.
Do you service my suburb?
Yes – all of metro Melbourne, from the CBD out through the northern, eastern, southern, bayside and western suburbs, with no travel surcharge.
