Why fleas seem to come back

Pupae are immune to insecticide – and that explains everything

A flea population is roughly 5% adults and 95% eggs, larvae and pupae down in the carpet pile, floor cracks and pet bedding. The adults you can see are the small visible part of it.

The pupa is the problem. It sits inside a sticky, protective cocoon that insecticide does not reliably penetrate, and it can wait in there for months. It hatches when it detects a host – vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide.

Which is exactly why people ring us a week after a treatment saying the fleas are back. They are not back – they were never killed, because they had not hatched yet. The residual is waiting for them and they die as they emerge, but for a week or two you keep seeing new adults. Nobody warns customers about this, so a normal treatment looks like a failed one.

It also explains the most useful thing you can do: vacuum every day for a fortnight, especially carpet edges and under furniture. The vibration triggers pupae to hatch early, straight into the treated surface. And treat the pet at the same time – a treated house with an untreated animal simply gets re-seeded.

Where they actually are

The Flea You See Is 5% Of The Problem

Three places the other 95% is sitting, and why each one matters to the treatment.

Cat flea - the species on Melbourne dogs and cats

Carpet edges and floor cracks

Where the pupae wait

Eggs roll off the pet and fall into carpet pile, floor cracks and the gap at the skirting. Larvae feed there on organic debris, then pupate in place and wait.

How it is treated: Residual applied to carpet edges, skirtings, floorboard gaps and under furniture. This is the treatment that matters, and it is why furniture needs moving before we arrive.

House fly (Musca domestica) - breeds in bins and organic waste

Pet bedding and resting spots

The densest concentration

Wherever the animal sleeps has the highest egg and larval load in the property – a dog bed, a couch corner, the foot of a bed, or a favourite patch of sun.

How it is treated: Bedding gets hot washed or replaced, and the surrounding area treated. Pointing out the animal’s real resting spots is the most useful thing you can do on the day.

Brushtail possum climbing a tree in a Melbourne garden - no removal warranted

The yard, decking and subfloor

The outdoor reservoir

Shaded, sandy or mulched areas where the pet lies outside, plus under decking and in the subfloor – which is also where stray cats and possums drop eggs.

How it is treated: External treatment of shaded resting areas and subfloor access. Skipping this is why some indoor-only treatments keep failing in houses with a yard.

What you are seeing

Confirming It Is Fleas

Six things people report, and what each means.

Bites around the ankles and lower legs

Fleas jump from floor level, so bites cluster low. Bites higher on the body and in a line are more likely bed bugs – a different pest and a different treatment.

Tiny dark specks in the pet’s fur that turn red when wet

Flea dirt – digested blood. It is the most reliable home test there is, and it confirms the pet is the source.

Fleas appearing in an empty property

Pupae hatching because the vibration and warmth of people returning triggered them. Extremely common in rentals between tenancies, which is why end-of-lease flea treatment exists.

The pet scratching, especially at the tail base

The classic distribution for flea allergy dermatitis. Worth a vet visit alongside the property treatment.

More fleas a week after treatment

Normal, and not a failure. Pupae that had not hatched at the time of treatment are emerging into the residual and dying. It settles over one to two weeks.

Fleas but no pet in the house

Usually a previous tenant’s animal, or possums, rats or stray cats in the subfloor or roof. Worth checking, because otherwise it keeps happening.

How it works

Four Steps, One Clear Quote

Treat the floor, the bedding and the yard – and time it with the pet treatment.

1

Inspect and confirm

We confirm fleas rather than bed bugs or mites, and identify the pet’s real resting spots, which is where the density is highest.

2

Clear written quote

Findings and price before we start, plus preparation instructions – vacuuming, washing bedding and clearing floors makes a measurable difference to the result.

3

Treat inside and out

Residual to carpet edges, skirtings, floor cracks and under furniture, plus the pet’s bedding areas and the shaded outdoor spots and subfloor where the outdoor reservoir sits.

4

Vacuum daily for a fortnight

This is your part and it genuinely matters – vibration triggers pupae to hatch early into the treated surface. Empty the vacuum outside each time.

Three Things Most Flea Companies Will Not Tell You

01

Fleas after treatment are expected

Pupae are protected from insecticide and hatch on vibration and warmth. They emerge into the residual and die, but you will see adults for a week or two. Nobody explains this, so normal results get reported as failures.

02

Treating the house without the pet fails

An untreated animal re-seeds a treated property within days. Time your vet product with our visit – that pairing is what actually ends it.

03

Vacuuming is half the treatment

Daily vacuuming for a fortnight triggers pupae to hatch early into the treated surface. It is free, it is the single most useful thing you can do, and almost nobody is told to do it.

Questions, answered

Flea Control Melbourne FAQs

The questions we are asked most, answered straight.

How much does flea treatment cost in Melbourne?

Ours starts from $149 for a unit, $189 for a three to four bedroom house, and $249 where the yard and subfloor need treating too. Melbourne rates run $99-350 with $175-300 the common band. A visit takes 60-90 minutes and the residual lasts 8-12 weeks.

Why are there still fleas after the treatment?

Because flea pupae are protected inside a cocoon that insecticide does not reliably penetrate, and they hatch when they sense vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide. They emerge into the treated surface and die, but you will keep seeing new adults for one to two weeks. It is expected, not a failure.

What should I do after the treatment?

Vacuum every day for a fortnight, concentrating on carpet edges, under furniture and where the pet sleeps, and empty the vacuum outside each time. The vibration triggers pupae to hatch early into the residual. It is genuinely the most useful thing you can do.

Do I need to treat my pet as well?

Yes, and ideally at the same time. A treated house with an untreated animal is re-seeded within days. Use a vet-recommended product on the pet and book us for the property – neither half works properly alone.

How do I know it is fleas and not bed bugs?

Location. Fleas jump from floor level so bites cluster around the ankles and lower legs. Bed bug bites are higher on the body and often in a line. The other reliable test is flea dirt in the pet’s fur – dark specks that turn reddish on a damp tissue.

Why do I have fleas when I do not own a pet?

A previous tenant’s animal, or wildlife – possums, rats and stray cats in the subfloor or roof void drop eggs that hatch later. If there is no pet in the house, it is worth checking those spaces, or it simply recurs.

Do I need to leave the house during treatment?

Only until surfaces are dry, usually a few hours. Take fish tanks into account and cover them, and keep pets out of treated areas until dry. We give you the specifics when we book.

How long before the fleas are gone?

You will see a marked drop within a few days, and full clearance usually takes two to three weeks as the remaining pupae hatch out into the residual. If activity is unchanged after three weeks, something is wrong and we come back.

Do you do end of lease flea treatments?

Yes, from $149 with the dated receipt agents ask for. Book it after the carpets are cleaned and once the property is empty – steam cleaning after a treatment strips out the residual you paid for.

Do you service my suburb?

Yes – all of metro Melbourne, from the CBD out through the northern, eastern, southern, bayside and western suburbs, with no travel surcharge.
