Nobody can legally take your possum away
Under the Wildlife Act 1975 (Vic) every possum is protected native wildlife. A brushtail living inside your building may be trapped – but it must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture. It cannot be taken to a park, a reserve or anywhere else.
A ringtail possum cannot be trapped at all without a permit from DEECA. If that is what you have, a cage is not the answer and anyone putting one up is doing it illegally.
And the law is not just red tape. A possum dumped in unfamiliar bush walks into territory that is already taken, gets driven off, and usually starves or is killed within weeks. Relocation is not the kind option – it is the lethal one. The humane result is a sealed roof, which is exactly what we quote.
So when a competitor offers to “take it away”, you now know one of two things is true: they are breaking the law, or they are not telling you what actually happens to the animal.
Brushtail, Ringtail, or Neither?
The species decides what is legal, so identification comes before any cage goes up.

Brushtail possum
Trichosurus vulpecula
Cat-sized, thick bushy tail, pointed ears, grey-brown. The one in your roof, almost always.
The legal position: Can be trapped while it is living inside a building – then released on the same property within 50m, after sunset, the same day.

Ringtail possum
Pseudocheirus peregrinus
Smaller, slim white-tipped curled tail, rounded ears. Builds a nest (drey) of twigs in dense shrubs.
The legal position: Cannot be trapped at all without a DEECA permit. If it is a ringtail, the legal answer is proofing and habitat work, never a cage.

Possum in the garden only
Not inside the building
Feeding on fruit trees, roses or vegetables, crossing the fence at night, living in a tree hollow.
The legal position: No trapping licence covers this and no treatment is warranted. We will tell you so and suggest netting or a tree collar instead of taking your money.
Our Possum Work, On Camera
Clips from actual Melbourne possum jobs – the trap, the roofline, the seal and the release. Nothing loads until you press play.
The cage on the roof
A trap set on a Melbourne roof. It is checked the same evening, because the law gives us until sunset that day to have the possum back out on its own property.
The gap it came through
Steel mesh screwed over the entry point. This is the step that actually ends the job – a possum evicted from an open roof simply walks back in.
Working the roofline
Every lifted tile, broken eave and gap behind the fascia gets found and listed before we quote, so the price does not move later.
Back out where it belongs
Released on the same property after dark, as the Wildlife Act requires. It keeps its territory and you keep your roof.
Possum in Roof Melbourne: The Signs
Six things people describe on the phone, and what each one actually means.
Heavy thumping just after dusk and again before dawn
A brushtail leaving to feed and returning. Rats and mice run in quick bursts all night; a possum makes two deliberate trips.
Hissing, coughing or a low guttural screech
Territorial calls, usually two males. It sounds alarming and it means more than one animal is using your roof.
A stain spreading across the ceiling plaster
Urine soaking through the insulation. This is the point where the repair bill starts climbing past the removal cost.
Lifted roof tiles, a torn eave, or scratched fascia
The entry point. Find this and you have found the whole job – everything else is symptom.
Droppings 15-20mm, dark and cylindrical
Possum. Rat droppings are 8-12mm and taper at the ends. Getting this wrong sends the whole treatment down the wrong path.
A sudden smell with flies in one room
Something has died in the cavity. That is a dead animal job and it needs doing today, not next week.
Four Steps, One Clear Quote
Trapping is one step out of four. The other three are what make the result last.
Inspect and identify
We confirm the species first – brushtail or ringtail changes what is legal – then walk the roofline and roof void to find every entry point, not just the obvious one.
Clear written quote
You get the findings and a price before anything starts. If the possum is living in your garden rather than your building, we say so and there is nothing to pay.
Evict, legally
A cage trap or a one-way door, checked so the animal is never left sitting in it, and released on your property after sunset the same day exactly as the Act requires.
Seal it out
Steel mesh and capping over every entry point, plus advice on the branches giving roof access. This is the step that ends the problem, and it carries a 12-month warranty.
Possum Removal Cost Melbourne
Published, and quoted in writing after the inspection.
Possum removal & proofing
Trap, legal same-property release, and the entry points sealed. Single-storey brick and tile.
Two-storey or tin roof
Same job where the roofline needs height access or a colourbond/steel deck seal.
Rescue or eviction only
Animal removed and released, no sealing. Honest option when you are mid-renovation.
Dead possum removal
Carcass located and removed, area treated and deodorised.
What the price covers: the inspection, the trap or one-way door, the legal same-property release, and sealing the entry points we listed in your quote.
Comparing quotes? Melbourne rates run from about $280 plus GST to $700. A cheap number with no proofing in it is not a finished job – the next possum moves into an open roof within weeks. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.
12 months on every entry point we seal
The guarantee is on the invoice, not in the sales pitch. If a possum gets back in through something we sealed inside the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no charge.
Three Things Most Possum Companies Will Not Tell You
“Humane relocation” is a contradiction
It is illegal past 50 metres and it kills the animal. When you see the phrase, ask exactly where the possum ends up. The honest version of the service is eviction plus a sealed roof, and that is what we sell.
Trapping without proofing is a repeat booking
An empty roof with an open gap is prime real estate. Remove the animal and leave the hole and you will be calling someone again this season – which is precisely why some operators quote the catch cheap and never mention the seal.
Sometimes there is no job here
A possum in your fruit tree or crossing the fence at night is not something anyone is licensed to remove. We will tell you that, suggest netting or a tree collar, and not charge you for the visit.

Possum Removal Melbourne FAQs
The thirteen questions we are asked most, answered straight.
How much does possum removal cost in Melbourne?
Our possum removal starts from $350 for a single-storey brick and tile home, which covers trapping, the legal same-property release and sealing the entry points. Two-storey or tin-roof properties start from $450 because of the access and the different seal. Rescue-only is from $220 and dead possum removal from $149. Melbourne market rates run from about $280 plus GST up to $700, so compare what is included before you compare the number – a price with no proofing is not a finished job.
Can you take the possum away from my property?
No, and neither can anyone else legally. Under the Wildlife Act 1975 (Vic) a trapped brushtail must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture. Any company offering to take your possum away is either breaking the law or not telling you the truth about what they do with it.
Why is relocating a possum illegal?
Because it kills them. A possum dumped in unfamiliar bushland walks into territory that is already occupied, gets driven off by the resident possums, and usually starves or is taken by a predator within weeks. Studies of relocated brushtails show very high mortality. The law reflects the biology – the humane answer is to make your roof impossible to get back into, not to move the animal somewhere it cannot survive.
What if it is a ringtail possum?
Then the answer changes completely. Ringtails cannot be trapped at all without a permit from DEECA. If we identify a ringtail we will not put a cage up – we proof the building and work on the surrounding habitat instead. Telling brushtail from ringtail is the first thing our technician does on site, and it is why identification matters more than trapping equipment.
How do I get rid of possums in my roof for good?
Seal the way in. Trapping alone is temporary because a roof with an open entry point is prime real estate – the next possum moves in within weeks, often the same season. A permanent result is: find every gap, evict the current animal, then screw steel mesh or capping over each entry and trim the branches giving roof access. That is why every quote we write covers proofing, not just the catch.
What does the possum proofing warranty cover?
Twelve months on the entry points we sealed and the workmanship on them. It does not cover new damage from storms or other trades, gaps opened up after we leave, or – and we would rather say this before you book than after – re-entry through a shared roof cavity in a townhouse or unit block, because we can only seal the part of the roof you own.
Do you do emergency possum removal at night?
Yes, the phone is answered 24/7. A possum trapped inside the living area, one caught in a chimney or wall cavity, or an injured animal is a genuine emergency and we will come out. A possum thumping around in the roof at 2am is horrible to sleep through but it is not dangerous – we will book you the first available slot rather than charge you for a night call you do not need.
What sounds does a possum make in the roof at night?
Heavy, deliberate thumps and a slow drag – a brushtail weighs two to four kilos and sounds like it. You will usually hear it leave shortly after dusk and come back before dawn. Fast, light scurrying that carries on all night is rodents, and hissing or coughing screeches mean two possums are arguing over the space.
Can possums damage my ceiling and roof?
Yes, and the damage is usually worse than the removal. Urine and droppings soak through insulation and stain plaster, insulation gets flattened and stops working, and possums chew wiring. Ceiling replacement runs into the thousands, which is why a stain spreading across the plaster is the point to stop waiting.
Do you remove dead possums?
Yes. We locate the carcass – usually in a wall cavity, roof void or subfloor – remove it, then treat and deodorise the area. From $149. The smell peaks around a week to ten days and flies at a single window are the usual giveaway for which room to open up.
Is the treatment humane?
The animal is not harmed at any point. Cage traps are checked so the possum is never left sitting in one, it is released on its own property the same evening, and the actual solution is a sealed roof rather than anything done to the possum. We do not use poison on possums – it is illegal and it leaves you with a carcass in the ceiling.
Do you service my suburb?
Yes – we cover all of metro Melbourne, from the CBD out through the northern, eastern, southern, bayside and western suburbs, with no travel surcharge inside the metro area.
How long does possum removal take?
The inspection and quote take about an hour. Sealing the entry points is usually the same visit or the next one, and the trap stays up until the animal is out – typically one to three nights. You are not left waiting weeks for a result.
