Before you buy spikes

Spikes do almost nothing for the gap under solar panels

Spikes stop birds landing on a flat ledge. They do nothing about the 100mm gap between your panels and the roof, because birds do not land on the spikes – they fly straight past them into the sheltered cavity underneath. That gap is warm, dry, hidden from predators and effectively a purpose-built pigeon loft.

The product that actually works there is mesh clipped around the perimeter of the array. It closes the gap rather than making one surface uncomfortable, and a properly specified system clips to the panel frames without drilling, so it does not affect your panel warranty.

There is a second problem people discover afterwards. Bird nests carry mites, and when you remove the birds without removing the nesting material, the mites go looking for a new host – which frequently means coming down into the bedrooms below. Nest removal and cleaning is part of the job, not an optional extra.

And a word on the law: many Australian native birds are protected. We deal with feral pigeons, starlings and mynas, and where the birds are a protected native species we proof and exclude rather than remove.

Which bird have you got?

Pigeon Or Starling? It Changes The Proofing

Two very different birds using two very different gaps in your roof.

Feral pigeon (Columba livia) - roosting on roofs and under solar panels

Feral pigeon

Columba livia

The big one, roosting on ledges, gutters and especially in the gap beneath solar panels. Produces heavy droppings that corrode metal, block gutters and make panels lose output.

How it is proofed: Perimeter mesh around the solar array, plus clearing the accumulated nesting and droppings underneath. Spikes only help on genuinely flat ledges.

Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris) - nests in roof voids and eaves

Common starling

Sturnus vulgaris

Smaller and far pushier about getting inside – into roof voids through broken tiles, gaps behind fascia and under eaves. You hear the chicks before you see the adults.

How it is proofed: Sealing the entry points with mesh and capping, timed to avoid trapping chicks inside. Nesting material must come out or the mites stay behind.

What you are seeing

What You Are Noticing

Six signs, and what each one tells us about the job.

Droppings streaking down the roof or wall

A regular roost directly above. Droppings are acidic and will corrode colorbond and mortar over time, so this is not purely cosmetic.

Scuffling and chirping in the ceiling in spring

Starlings nesting in the roof void. Spring means chicks, which changes the timing – sealing an entry with chicks inside creates a dead animal job.

Solar output has dropped without an obvious cause

Droppings and nesting material under and on the panels. It is one of the most common reasons for unexplained output loss on Melbourne roofs.

Gutters blocking repeatedly with twigs and straw

Nesting material being dropped or built nearby. It also creates a water-ingress risk the next time it rains hard.

Small biting insects indoors after birds left

Bird mites looking for a new host once the nest is abandoned. This is the reason nesting material has to be removed, not just the birds.

Birds flying in and out under the panel edge

The classic solar gap. Spikes will not fix this one – the gap needs closing with mesh.

How it works

Four Steps, One Clear Quote

Clear it, close it, and clean up what was left behind.

1

Inspect the roofline and array

We find every gap being used – panel perimeter, broken tiles, fascia gaps, eaves and vents – rather than treating the one you can see from the ground.

2

Clear written quote

Findings and price before we start, including whether the birds are a species we can legally deal with, and whether chicks are present.

3

Clear nests and clean

Nesting material, droppings and debris removed, and the area treated for bird mites. This is the step that stops mites coming down into the bedrooms.

4

Proof it properly

Mesh clipped around the solar array without drilling, plus mesh and capping on roof entry points. Twelve-month warranty on the proofing.

Bird Proofing Cost Melbourne

Published, quoted in writing, and priced on the roofline rather than guessed.

Most booked

Solar panel proofing

from$499

Mesh clipped around the array perimeter, plus clearing what is underneath.

Roof entry proofing

from$350

Sealing broken tiles, fascia gaps, eaves and vents with mesh and capping.

Nest removal & clean

from$250

Nesting material and droppings removed, area treated for bird mites.

Ledge spikes

from$200

Where the problem genuinely is a flat ledge – the one place spikes are the right product.

What the price covers: the roofline inspection, clearing nests and droppings, mite treatment, and proofing with mesh that clips to panel frames without drilling.

Comparing quotes? Melbourne bird proofing runs $200-$1,500 with most jobs $500-$2,000; spikes are $200-500 and netting or solar mesh $300-$2,000. Solar proofing commonly starts around $499. The question worth asking is whether they are quoting mesh or spikes for a solar gap – spikes are the wrong product there. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.

12 months on the proofing, and no drilling into your panels

Proofing either closes the gap or it does not. Ours is warranted, and it is installed in a way that does not put your solar warranty at risk.

Three Things Most Bird Companies Will Not Tell You

01

Spikes are the wrong product for solar

Birds fly past them into the gap underneath. Spikes belong on flat ledges. Anyone quoting spikes for a solar array is selling you something that will not work.

02

The mites come indoors afterwards

Take the birds and leave the nest and the mites go looking for another host, which often means your bedrooms. Nest removal and mite treatment is part of the job.

03

Timing matters in spring

Seal an entry point with chicks inside and you have paid us to create a dead animal job. We check before we close anything, even when it delays the work.

Questions, answered

Birds Nesting Control Melbourne FAQs

The questions we are asked most, answered straight.

How much does bird proofing cost in Melbourne?

Solar panel proofing starts from $499 including clearing what is underneath, roof entry proofing from $350, nest removal and cleaning from $250, and ledge spikes from $200. Melbourne rates run $200-$1,500 with most complete jobs $500-$2,000.

Do bird spikes work on solar panels?

No, and this is the most common mistake. Spikes stop birds landing on a flat surface; they do nothing about the gap between panel and roof, because birds fly past them into the space underneath. That gap needs closing with perimeter mesh.

Will bird proofing void my solar panel warranty?

Not the way we install it. Properly specified mesh clips to the panel frames without drilling, so nothing is penetrated and the panel warranty is unaffected. Be careful of installers who screw fixings into frames or rails.

Why do I have biting insects after the birds left?

Bird mites. When a nest is abandoned the mites go looking for a new host, and that often means the rooms below. It is exactly why nesting material has to be removed and the area treated, rather than simply excluding the birds.

Are birds protected in Victoria?

Many native species are, yes. Feral pigeons, common starlings and common mynas are introduced species and can be managed. Where the birds are a protected native species, the legal approach is proofing and exclusion rather than removal, and that is what we will quote.

Can you proof while there are chicks in the nest?

No, and we will not. Sealing an entry with chicks inside creates a dead animal problem in your roof. We check first and, if chicks are present, schedule the proofing for once they have fledged.

Do bird droppings actually damage the roof?

Yes. They are acidic and over time they corrode colorbond, degrade mortar and block gutters, which creates water ingress risk. On solar arrays they also reduce panel output, which is often what prompts the call.

How long does bird proofing last?

Properly installed mesh lasts many years – it is a physical barrier, not a deterrent that wears off. We warrant our proofing for 12 months against failure of the installation.

What is the difference between netting and mesh?

Netting spans a large opening, like a courtyard or loading dock. Mesh is a rigid perimeter barrier, which is what suits a solar array or a roofline gap. For most Melbourne homes, mesh is the right answer.

Do you service my suburb?

Yes – all of metro Melbourne, from the CBD out through the northern, eastern, southern, bayside and western suburbs, with no travel surcharge.
