The white-tail necrosis story is not supported by the evidence
Almost every spider page in Melbourne leans on the same claim: that a white-tailed spider bite rots your flesh. It is the most effective fear lever in this industry, and the evidence does not support it.
The definitive Australian study followed 130 confirmed white-tail bites where the spider was caught and formally identified by an arachnologist. Not one produced a necrotic ulcer. What people actually experienced was short-lived pain, a red mark and some itching. Where necrosis does occur, the cause is generally a bacterial infection that was never the spider’s doing.
We will still treat white-tails, because nobody wants them wandering across the bedroom floor at night. But we will not sell you a treatment using a story that is not true, and if a company quotes you on the strength of necrosis photos, that tells you something about the rest of their advice.
The spider that genuinely warrants urgency in a Melbourne backyard is the redback – and that one gets treated properly.
The Four Spiders In Melbourne Homes
Four very different spiders, and only one of them genuinely warrants urgency.

Redback spider
Latrodectus hasselti
Glossy black with the red stripe on the back of the abdomen. Builds a messy, tangled web low down – under outdoor furniture, in letterboxes, behind the barbecue, under the kids’ play equipment and around sheds.
How worried to be: The one that matters. Bites need medical attention and antivenom exists. Treat and remove webs, and check under outdoor furniture before summer.

White-tailed spider
Lampona cylindrata / murina
Slim, dark grey, 12-18mm, with a distinct white spot at the tip of the abdomen. It builds no web – it hunts other spiders at night, which is why it turns up indoors in bedding and clothing.
How worried to be: Unpleasant, not dangerous. Bites cause pain and a red mark; the necrosis claim is not supported by the evidence. We treat it because it comes indoors, not because it will rot your leg.

Huntsman spider
Sparassidae family
Large, flat, fast and hairy – the one behind the sun visor. Alarming out of all proportion to the risk, and genuinely useful: a huntsman in your roof void is eating the insects you would otherwise be calling us about.
How worried to be: Harmless and beneficial. We would rather relocate it than treat it, and we will say so. Blanket-spraying huntsmen removes a natural predator from your house.

Black house spider
Badumna insignis
Dark, stocky and velvety, sitting in a messy funnel-shaped web with a retreat tube at one corner. The webs on window frames, brickwork and the corners of the veranda are almost always this species.
How worried to be: Not dangerous – bites are rare and cause local pain rather than anything serious. Treated because the webbing is relentless, and web removal matters more than the spray.
What You Are Seeing Around The House
Six observations and what each one points to.
Messy tangled webs low down, near the ground
Redback structure – untidy and three-dimensional, not a neat wheel. Check under outdoor furniture, letterboxes and play equipment.
Neat wheel-shaped webs across the doorway each morning
Orb weavers. Seasonal, harmless and rebuilt nightly – a web removal job rather than a pest problem.
Spiders indoors at night, moving across the floor
Hunting species like white-tails, which build no web and wander. This is why they end up in shoes and bedding.
Webs in the eaves and window frames returning fast
The residual barrier has aged out. In Melbourne conditions a treatment typically holds three to six months on exposed surfaces.
A cluster of small spiders after a warm, wet spell
An egg sac has hatched nearby. Treatment plus removing the sacs is what stops a repeat in a few weeks.
Spiders concentrated around outdoor lighting
They are eating the insects the light attracts. Switching to warmer, lower-attraction globes does more than any spray.
Four Steps, One Clear Quote
Barrier, harbourage and webs – and an honest word on which spiders to leave alone.
Inspect and identify
We identify what you actually have. Redback gets urgency; huntsman gets a relocation and a straight answer rather than a treatment.
Clear written quote
Findings and price before we start. If your problem is seasonal orb weavers across the front door, we will tell you that a web removal is all you need.
Treat harbourage and barrier
Residual application to eaves, window frames, door frames, fence lines, sheds and under outdoor furniture, focused where spiders actually shelter rather than sprayed across open lawn.
Remove webs and egg sacs
Webs and sacs are physically removed. Leaving egg sacs behind is how a treated property is covered again a few weeks later.
Spider Control Cost Melbourne
Published, quoted in writing, and quoted on what your property actually needs.
Spider treatment
Unit or small home. Internal harbourage, external barrier and web removal.
Standard home
Three to four bedroom house, including eaves, sheds and fence lines.
Large or two-storey home
Where the roofline and perimeter need height access.
Redback treatment
Targeted work on outdoor furniture, play equipment, sheds and letterboxes.
What the price covers: the inspection and identification, internal harbourage treatment, an external residual barrier, and physical removal of webs and egg sacs.
Comparing quotes? Melbourne rates run about $198-250 for units, $280 for a medium home and up to $440 for large properties, with a residual that holds three to six months. Ask whether web and egg-sac removal is included – without it you will be looking at webs again within weeks. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.
Treated, and told the truth about what bit you
Spider control is the easiest place in this industry to sell fear. We would rather tell you which spider is genuinely a problem and treat that one properly.
Three Things Most Spider Companies Will Not Tell You
The white-tail story sells treatments
130 confirmed bites with the spider identified produced no necrotic ulcers. The photos used in advertising are generally bacterial infections. We will treat white-tails; we will not lie about them.
Huntsmen are on your side
They eat cockroaches and other insects inside your roof void. Blanket-spraying them removes a free predator and achieves very little else.
Egg sacs undo the treatment
Spray without removing sacs and the property is re-colonised within weeks. If a quote does not mention sac removal, ask why not.

Spider Control Melbourne FAQs
The questions we are asked most, answered straight.
How much does spider control cost in Melbourne?
Ours starts from $199 for a unit or small home and $249 for a standard three to four bedroom house, including the external barrier and web removal. Melbourne rates generally run $198-250 for units, around $280 for a medium home and up to $440 for large properties.
Are white-tailed spider bites really dangerous?
The evidence says no. The definitive Australian study followed 130 confirmed white-tail bites where the spider was caught and identified, and found no necrotic ulceration at all – just short-lived pain, a red mark and itching. Necrosis attributed to white-tails is generally a bacterial infection. We treat them because nobody wants one in the bed, not because of the folklore.
What should I do about a redback bite?
Seek medical attention. Redback bites cause severe local pain that builds over time, often with sweating and nausea, and antivenom is available. Apply a cold pack, do not use a pressure bandage, and go to a doctor or hospital. This is the Melbourne spider that genuinely warrants urgency.
How long does spider treatment last?
Three to six months on exposed external surfaces in Melbourne conditions, and longer in sheltered areas like eaves and sheds. Rain, direct sun and repainting all shorten it. Most homes book once a year, usually going into spring.
Do you remove the webs as well?
Yes, webs and egg sacs are physically removed as part of the job. It matters more than people expect – spraying without taking egg sacs off the building means the property gets re-colonised within a few weeks.
Should I get rid of huntsman spiders?
Honestly, usually not. They are harmless to humans and they eat cockroaches and other insects inside your roof void and wall cavities. We will relocate one out of a car or a bedroom happily, but blanket-spraying them removes a useful predator from your house.
When are spiders worst in Melbourne?
Spring and summer, as temperatures rise and insect numbers climb. Redbacks are most obvious over summer around outdoor furniture and play equipment, and orb weavers peak in autumn across doorways and paths.
Is the treatment safe for pets and children?
Yes, applied as directed. We use registered products, apply them to harbourage and perimeter rather than across open play areas, and tell you what needs to dry before children and pets go back out – usually a few hours. Mention fish ponds and chickens when you book.
Why do I get spiders around my outdoor lights?
Because the light draws the insects they eat. Changing to warmer-toned, lower-attraction globes, or moving the fitting away from the door, reduces spider activity more reliably than repeated spraying does.
Do you service my suburb?
Yes – all of metro Melbourne, from the CBD out through the northern, eastern, southern, bayside and western suburbs, with no travel surcharge.
