You will see MORE cockroaches for a week or two. That is the treatment working
Every professional cockroach job produces the same phone call about five days later: there are more of them than before. There are not. The products flush them out of wall voids, cabinet cavities and appliance motors and into the open, and gel baits take seven to fourteen days to move through a colony. Seeing roaches in the open is evidence the treatment reached where they were hiding.
The mistake that undoes it is spraying supermarket surface spray over the top. Repellent spray drives them away from the gel they were about to eat and carry back to the harbourage. If you want to help, wipe up crumbs and standing water and leave the gel alone.
The second thing worth knowing: a German cockroach job is not finished in one visit. Eggs sit in a protective case that treatments do not penetrate, so a new generation hatches after the first application. An honest program prices the follow-up from the start – and any quote that promises a one-spray fix for German cockroaches is guessing with your money.
Four Cockroaches, One That Really Matters
German cockroaches breed indoors and need a program. The other three walk in from outside and mostly need the gap sealed.

German cockroach
Blattella germanica – 12-15mm
Small, tan, with two dark stripes behind the head. Lives indoors permanently, in kitchens and bathrooms – inside cabinet hinges, under the kettle, behind the dishwasher and inside appliance motors where it is warm.
What it means for treatment: The serious one. Gel bait plus an insect growth regulator, and a follow-up visit built into the price. This species breeds indoors, so it will not resolve on its own.

Australian cockroach
Periplaneta australasiae – 30-35mm
Large, reddish-brown with pale yellow edging on the wing bases. Lives outdoors in gardens, mulch, compost and subfloors, and comes inside on warm nights or when it rains.
What it means for treatment: Usually a perimeter and entry problem rather than an indoor infestation. Treatment focuses outside, plus sealing gaps under doors and around pipes.

American cockroach
Periplaneta americana – 35-40mm
The biggest of the three, reddish-brown, and a strong flier on hot nights. Associated with drains, grease pits, sewers and commercial kitchens rather than domestic pantries.
What it means for treatment: Treat the harbourage – drains, pits and subfloors – not the kitchen bench. In commercial premises this is usually a drainage and grease problem before it is a spray problem.

Oriental cockroach
Blatta orientalis – 25-30mm
Very dark brown to near-black and greasy looking, slower than the others, and the females are effectively wingless. Lives in drains, subfloors, damp basements and around leaking pipes.
What it means for treatment: A moisture problem as much as a pest problem. Treatment targets drains, subfloors and damp harbourage – fix the leak and the population usually collapses with it.
How Bad Is It? What You Are Seeing
Six observations, and what each one says about the size of the problem.
One or two large roaches at night, near a door or drain
Almost always an outdoor species wandering in. Annoying, but not an indoor breeding population – the fix is usually a door seal and a perimeter treatment.
Small tan roaches in the kitchen, in daylight
German cockroach, and daylight sightings mean the harbourage is crowded. Seeing them during the day is a sign of a well-established population, not a lucky glimpse.
Coarse black specks like ground pepper in a cupboard
Droppings, and a reliable indicator of where they are actually living. Look inside cabinet hinges, behind the toe-kick and under the sink.
A musty, oily smell in the kitchen
Aggregation pheromone from a large population. If you can smell it, this is well past the point where DIY products will resolve it.
Small brown capsules the shape of a purse
Egg cases (oothecae). Each German cockroach case holds around 30-40 eggs, and treatments do not penetrate them – which is exactly why the follow-up visit exists.
Roaches inside the kettle, toaster or dishwasher seal
Classic German cockroach harbourage – they want warmth and moisture. Appliance interiors are a place DIY spray never reaches and gel placement does.
Four Steps, One Clear Quote
The same approach for one apartment kitchen or a full commercial premises.
Identify the species
German or outdoor. This single decision changes everything: an indoor breeding species needs a program, a wandering outdoor species mostly needs the perimeter treated and the gap sealed.
Clear written quote
You get the findings and the price before we start, including whether a follow-up is needed. If you have one American cockroach from a drain, we will tell you that rather than sell a program.
Treat the harbourage, not the bench
Gel bait placed inside cabinet hinges, appliance voids and cavities, plus an insect growth regulator so juveniles cannot reach breeding age. Targeted placement, not a fog of spray across your kitchen.
Follow up
For German cockroaches a second visit lands after the eggs hatch, which is what actually breaks the cycle. It is priced in from the start, not added later.
Cockroach Control Cost Melbourne
Published, and quoted in writing.
Cockroach treatment
Standard internal and external treatment for outdoor species and light activity.
German cockroach program
Gel bait plus growth regulator, with the follow-up visit included in the price.
Heavy infestation
Kitchen, laundry and bathroom where the population is well established.
Commercial kitchen
Discreet scheduling outside trading hours with treatment records for your auditor.
What the price covers: the inspection, targeted gel and growth regulator placement in the harbourage, written findings, prevention advice, and – on German cockroach programs – the follow-up visit.
Comparing quotes? Melbourne rates run $179-350 for residential work, with small German infestations $220-280 and heavy ones $350-450. The important question is not the number, it is whether the follow-up is included: a cheap German cockroach treatment with no second visit will fail. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.
The follow-up is in the price, not in the small print
Cockroach work is where the second invoice usually appears. Ours does not, because the second visit is quoted from the start on any job that needs one.
Three Things Most Cockroach Companies Will Not Tell You
More roaches after treatment is normal
Products flush them out of voids and gels take 7-14 days to move through a colony. It looks alarming and it means the treatment reached them. Nobody warns customers, so everybody panics.
One spray will not clear German cockroaches
Egg cases are protected and hatch after the first application. Any quote promising a one-visit fix for this species is either inexperienced or hoping you will pay twice.
Your surface spray is fighting our gel
Repellent supermarket spray drives roaches away from the bait they were about to carry home. The most useful thing you can do after treatment is nothing.

Cockroach Control Melbourne FAQs
The questions we are asked most, answered straight.
How much does cockroach control cost in Melbourne?
Our standard cockroach treatment starts from $179. A German cockroach program – gel bait, growth regulator and the follow-up visit – starts from $280, and a heavy infestation across kitchen, laundry and bathroom from $395. Melbourne rates run $179-350 residential, with German jobs $220-450 depending on severity.
Why are there more cockroaches after the treatment?
Because the products flush them out of wall voids, cabinet cavities and appliance motors into the open, and gel baits take 7 to 14 days to work through the colony. Increased sightings for one to two weeks is the treatment working, not failing. It settles as the bait moves through.
Should I spray them myself after you have treated?
Please do not. Supermarket surface sprays repel cockroaches, which drives them away from the gel they were about to eat and carry back to the harbourage – so DIY spray actively undoes the professional treatment. Wipe up crumbs and standing water instead.
Why do German cockroaches need two visits?
Their eggs sit in a protective case that treatments do not penetrate. Whatever is done on day one, a new generation hatches afterwards. The second visit lands after that hatch, which is what actually breaks the cycle – so it is included in the price rather than sold to you later.
How do I know if it is a German cockroach?
Size and location. German cockroaches are small – 12-15mm, tan, with two dark stripes behind the head – and they live indoors permanently, in kitchens and bathrooms. The big reddish-brown 30-40mm ones are outdoor species that wander in and are a much smaller problem.
Is the treatment safe around food preparation areas?
Yes, because of how it is applied. Gel goes into cabinet hinges, voids and cavities rather than across benches, and we tell you what to clear and what needs wiping before use. Mention any food business requirements when you book and the technician plans around them.
How long does cockroach treatment take to work?
You should see a clear drop within 7 to 14 days as the gel moves through the population. German cockroach programs are typically resolved after the follow-up visit. If activity is unchanged after the second visit, something is wrong and we come back.
Do cockroaches mean my house is dirty?
No. German cockroaches are usually brought in – in a cardboard box, a second-hand appliance, a delivery, or through a shared wall in an apartment block. Cleanliness affects how fast a population grows, not whether it arrives. It is one of the reasons people leave it too long before calling.
Do you do commercial cockroach control?
Yes. Cafes, restaurants, aged care and food manufacturing get discreet scheduling outside trading hours and documented treatment records that an auditor or landlord will accept.
How do I stop them coming back?
For German cockroaches, the program plus keeping food and water sources down. For the large outdoor species it is mostly exclusion – seal the gap under external doors, screen the drains, and keep mulch and compost away from the wall line.
