Do not bin the mattress – that is how it spreads to the next room
The first instinct is always the same: drag the mattress to the kerb. It is almost always the wrong move. Carrying an infested mattress through the house sheds bugs and eggs along the hallway, and you turn a one-room problem into a three-room one on the way out the door.
It is also unnecessary. Bed bugs do not live in the mattress so much as around it – in the seams, the bed frame joints, the slats, the bedhead, the skirting behind the bed and the power point beside it. A treated mattress is nearly always saveable, and buying a new one to put back into an untreated room simply feeds the same population.
The other thing worth knowing before you compare quotes: one chemical visit will not finish it. Eggs are not reliably killed by residual product, and they hatch a week or two later. A chemical program is two visits by design, 10 to 14 days apart. Heat is the exception – holding a room at 55-60C kills every life stage including eggs in a single application, which is why it costs more and why it is sometimes worth it.
Anyone quoting a one-visit chemical fix is either inexperienced or expecting you to pay twice.
How To Confirm It Is Actually Bed Bugs
Plenty of bites are not bed bugs. Here is what confirms it before anybody spends money.
The adult bug
Cimex lectularius – 4-5mm
Flat, oval, rust-brown and about the size of an apple pip. Visible without magnification, and noticeably rounder and darker after feeding.
What it tells us: Finding one adult confirms it. Catch it in a jar or photograph it rather than squashing it – identification changes the treatment.
Where they actually hide
Seams, frames and joints
They cluster in tight, dark harbourages within about two metres of where you sleep – mattress piping, bed frame joints, slats, the bedhead and the skirting behind it.
What it tells us: This is why treatment targets the room and not just the bed, and why a new mattress in an untreated room gets infested again.
Spotting and shed skins
Dark specks along the seam
Small dark ink-like spots along the mattress piping is digested blood; alongside it you often find pale translucent shed skins as the nymphs grow.
What it tells us: Spotting confirms an established population rather than a single hitchhiker, and tells us where the harbourage is.
Signs Of Bed Bugs In Melbourne Homes
Six things people report, and what each one means.
Bites in a line or cluster on exposed skin
Classic feeding pattern along arms, shoulders and legs. Not everyone reacts – one person in a bed can be covered while their partner shows nothing at all.
Small dark spots along the mattress piping
Faecal spotting. This is the single most reliable confirmation and the first thing our technician looks for.
Pale translucent shells in the seam
Shed skins from growing nymphs. It means breeding, not a one-off hitchhiker brought home in a bag.
Bites that started after travel or a second-hand bed
The two most common arrival routes in Melbourne – a suitcase on a hotel bed, or second-hand furniture bought in good faith.
Small blood smears on the sheets
From a bug crushed while feeding. Usually noticed at the same time as the bites and worth photographing before washing.
Bites in one bedroom of a share house or apartment
Bed bugs travel along wall cavities and service risers. In a block or share house, treating one room while the adjoining one is untouched rarely holds.
Two Visits By Design, One Clear Quote
The follow-up is in the price from the start, because the biology requires it.
Confirm and inspect
We confirm it is actually bed bugs, then inspect the mattress, frame, bedhead, skirting, power points and adjoining rooms to map how far it has travelled.
Clear written quote, per room
Bed bug work is priced per room because that is how the treatment is applied. You get the number, the room count and the method before anything starts.
Treat the room, not just the bed
Residual product into every harbourage – seams, joints, slats, skirting and around power points – or heat where the situation calls for it. Heat kills all life stages in one application.
Follow up 10-14 days later
On chemical programs the second visit lands after the surviving eggs hatch. This is what breaks the cycle and it is included in the price.
Bed Bug Treatment Cost Melbourne
Priced per room, published, and with the follow-up already included.
Chemical treatment
Per room, including the follow-up visit 10-14 days later.
Additional room
Each further room treated at the same visit.
Heat treatment
Room held at 55-60C. Kills every life stage including eggs in one application.
Inspection only
Confirmation and a written finding, credited against treatment if you book.
What the price covers: inspection and confirmation, treatment of every harbourage in the room rather than just the bed, written preparation instructions, and – on chemical programs – the second visit.
Comparing quotes? Melbourne chemical treatments run $300-600 per bedroom and heat $800-1,500 per room. The question that matters is whether the follow-up is in the price. A $300 chemical treatment with no second visit is not cheaper than ours – it is unfinished. Send us any written quote and we will beat it by 5%.
The second visit is in the price, not in the small print
Bed bug work is where hidden second invoices are most common. Ours is quoted from the start because the eggs make it necessary, not optional.
Three Things Most Bed Bug Companies Will Not Tell You
Binning the mattress usually spreads it
Carrying it through the house sheds bugs and eggs down the hallway. The mattress is nearly always saveable, and a new one in an untreated room gets infested anyway.
One chemical visit will fail
Eggs are not reliably killed by residual product and they hatch a week or two later. Two visits is the design, not an upsell – which is why ours is priced in from the start.
It has nothing to do with cleanliness
Bed bugs arrive in luggage and second-hand furniture. Five-star hotels get them. The shame around this is the reason people wait months before calling, and waiting is what makes it expensive.

Bed Bug Treatment Melbourne FAQs
The questions we are asked most, answered straight.
How much does bed bug treatment cost in Melbourne?
Our chemical treatment starts from $349 per room including the follow-up visit, with each additional room from $249. Heat treatment is from $990 per room and kills every life stage in one application. Melbourne rates run $300-600 per bedroom for chemical and $800-1,500 for heat – always check whether the follow-up is included, because a chemical treatment without one is unfinished.
Should I throw out my mattress?
Usually not, and carrying it out is how a one-room problem becomes a three-room one. Bed bugs live around the bed as much as in it – frame joints, slats, bedhead, skirting and power points – so a new mattress in an untreated room simply gets infested. We will tell you honestly if a mattress is genuinely beyond saving.
Why do bed bugs need two treatments?
Because eggs are not reliably killed by residual products, and they hatch 7 to 14 days later. The second visit lands after that hatch and kills the new generation before it can breed. Heat treatment is the exception – holding the room at 55-60C kills all stages including eggs in one go.
Chemical or heat treatment – which is better?
Heat is faster and finishes in one application, which suits hotels, share houses and anyone who cannot be out of the room twice. Chemical costs less and leaves a residual that keeps working, but needs the follow-up. For most Melbourne homes chemical is the sensible choice; for a heavily infested single room on a deadline, heat earns its price.
How did I get bed bugs?
Luggage and second-hand furniture, overwhelmingly. They hitchhike home from hotels, hostels, planes and other people’s houses, or arrive in a bed frame or couch bought in good faith. It has nothing to do with how clean your home is – five-star hotels deal with them constantly.
How do I prepare for the treatment?
We send written instructions when you book. In short: strip the bedding and wash it hot then tumble dry, clear the floor around the bed, empty the bedside drawers, and do not move items to another room – that is exactly how it spreads. Do not spray anything yourself first.
Are the bites dangerous?
They are not known to transmit disease. The real harm is the itching, the broken sleep and the stress, plus the risk of secondary infection from scratching. Reactions vary hugely – one person can be covered in welts while their partner in the same bed shows nothing.
Can I stay in the room after treatment?
After chemical treatment you can usually return once surfaces are dry, typically a few hours, and we will tell you exactly what needs to dry. Heat treatment requires the room to be vacated for the day. Either way you can sleep in the bed that night – staying out of the room actually makes it worse, because the bugs disperse to find you.
Do you treat apartments and share houses?
Yes, and we will tell you plainly when adjoining rooms need doing too. Bed bugs travel through wall cavities and service risers, so treating one room in a block while the neighbouring one is untouched often will not hold.
Do you provide documentation for my landlord?
Yes – written confirmation of the inspection, the treatment and the follow-up, which is what agents and landlords ask for. We can also attend without branded vehicles or uniforms if you would rather the building did not know.
